Inspired by the Viennese New Year’s Day Concerts, Vienna Nights features dazzling opera arias, duets, overtures and orchestral interludes. Manukau Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Uwe Grodd, is joined by narrator Raymond Hawthorne, soprano Lilia Carpinelli and Tenor Derek Hill. Works to be performed include Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture, Puccini’s Nessun Dorma – made famous by Pavarotti – Suppé’s Light Cavalry Overture and Rossini’s Une voce poco fa, from the opera The Barber of Seville. And much, much more… So expect to sit back and relax, and enjoy a potpourri of beautiful music with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra. These Autumn Concerts are proudly supported by Genesis Energy.

Mozart - Il Seraglio Overture Weber - Clarinet Concertino, Op.26 Ritchie - Piano Concerto No.3, world premiere - commissioned by Manukau Symphony Dvorak - 'New World' Symphony Uwe Grodd - Conductor Emma Sayers - Piano Natalie Harris - Clarinet, 2009 Phil & Helen Greenbank Scholar Manukau Symphony Orchestra is proud to premiere composer-in-residence Anthony Ritchie’s Piano Concerto No.3, commissioned by the orchestra. This sunny and life-affirming work has been written especially for Wellingtonian pianist Emma Sayers, renowned for her performances of 20th-century music. Before presenting this wonderful new work, the Manukau Symphony Orchestra will perform Mozart’s light-hearted Il Seraglio Overture. Eugene Albulescu - Conductor/Piano Morag Atchison - Soprano A Classical Beethoven programme featuring the Prometheus Overture, Piano Concerto No.1, Ah Perfido aria and Symphony No. 8. Especially for this concert, Manukau Symphony Orchestra welcomes guest conductor Eugene Albulescu, resident of the USA with a special link to New Zealand. Eugene will conduct the orchestra from the piano for the Piano Concerto – as this is exactly how Beethoven himself would have done it in the 18th century. Manukau Symphony Orchestra is also proud to present Auckland soprano Morag Atchison to her first performance in Manukau. A heart-warming and inspiring evening not to be missed!

Rupert D’Cruze - Conductor Robert van Mackelenberg - Narrator Enjoy a musical adventure with your children and grandchildren in this one-hour concert with music from the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie. Children and adults alike will discover the instruments of the orchestra in Britten’s Guide to the Orchestra, with narrator Robert van Mackelenberg leading the way. Then be delighted by the “Danses Characteristiques” from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite – ballet students will be very familiar with these tunes! A fun and inspiring occasion for all the family – with a couple of surprises in store!

Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No.1 Xinghai Xian - Yellow River Cantata - New Zealand Premiere Uwe Grodd - Conductor Chenyin Li - Piano Vocal Soloists with the Music Association of Auckland (MAA) Manukau Symphony Orchestra and Music Association Auckland, with support from the People’s Republic of China, are proud to present the New Zealand premiere of Xinghai Xian’s Yellow River Cantata, conducted by Uwe Grodd. Xian’s landmark Chinese Yellow River Cantata was the first to integrate Chinese folk melodies and poetry into a Western-style operatic cantata. This awe-inspiring dramatic work, with solo arias, duets, chorus and narration, is performed with Manukau’s full Symphony strength. 2009 marks the 70th anniversary of the work’s composition. For the first half of these concerts, Manukau Symphony Orchestra Music Director, Uwe Grodd, will team up with prize-winning pianist, Chenyin Li, to present Tchaikovsky's magnificent piano concerto. Chenyi Li, now resident in London, is the recipient of many international first prizes such as the European Beethoven Gold Medal. Her solo recital at the NZ International Piano Festival in 2007 was described by the Herald as ‘…by far, the most rewarding evening of the festival’. |
