UPCOMING CONCERT: SIBELIUS
Saturday 19 June 2010, 7.30pm Genesis Energy Theatre, TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, 770 Great South Road, Manukau City BOOK NOW! Programme: LILBURN - Aotearoa Overture SIBELIUS - Violin Concerto STERNEFELD - Song and Dance at the Court of Mary of Burgundy GRIEG - Peer Gynt Suite No.1 IVAN MEYLEMANS - Conductor SIMEON BROOM - Violin Distinctive musical language from Northern Europe features in Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s SIBELIUS concert on Saturday 19 June 2010. Finnish composer Jean Sibelius only wrote one concerto – the exalted violin concerto in D minor, which requires exceptional technique and sophistication from the violin player. The performance will be an intensive session of violin gymnastics for soloist Simeon Broom, a young kiwi who thought leaving New Zealand in March for the cold and grey European winter was quite a shock, but who says, ‘now it seems the shock will be coming back for the first New Zealand winter in 7 years. I think I’ve grown quite accustomed to central heating… Still, sitting in jandals at the beach is the wrong kind of inspiration for the Sibelius Concerto, so it’s probably just as well.’
The New Zealand flavour of the first half of the concert is also reflected in the “grandfather of New Zealand music” Douglas Lilburn’s sprightly Aotearoa Overture.
The second half of the concert showcases two suites with shorter movements, including Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite No.1. This music, first written for a play with the same title and steeped in Norwegian mythology, features the familiar “Morning” and “Anitra’s Dance” as well as the frenetic “In the Hall of the Mountain King” where the main character, Peer, tries to escape from the trolls and their King.
The concert closes with a suite of romantic medieval dances by Belgian composer Daniel Sternefeld, dedicated to the illustrious Duchess Mary of Burgundy, who together with her husband Maximilian I ensured their court was the centre of a flourishing arts and sciences community in the late 1400s. Manukau Symphony Orchestra is conducted by Belgian guest conductor Ivan Meylemans, who first visited in 2008 and left a lasting impression on both the audience and the orchestra, and who now conducts renowned European orchestras - so we are proud to have him back!
